About me

Hello, my name is Inês Assis
I live in Graça, in Lisbon, with my three children and our cat Shifú. I have sun, moon and ascendant in Leo. So much fire results in an immense creativity that more recently have  manifested itself in painting

I have a degree in Graphic Design and a Master's degree in Visual Culture Theory from IADE. For the last 17 years I have worked as a graphic, web and editorial designer, both in agencies and on a freelance basis. The visual arts have always been present in my life, having a father who is an artist and art teacher from whom I learned a lot, a grandmother who was also a painter and a great-aunt who, at 96 years old, still teaches art classes today.

Although the love for painting has always been present, only recently, in January 2023, I had the courage to show my work to the world. I had my first solo exhibition with 20 works exhibited at Fábrica do Braço de Prata, in Lisbon. It was at the same time a beautiful celebration, around 150 people were present.

Still in 2023, I participated in two art fairs at the invitation of Galerias de Loures, I had another solo exhibition in November, at “Atelier da Graça” in Lisbon entitled “Expansão”, and I participated in the exhibition “12x12” which took place at Mercado de Santa Clara in Lisbon.

In February 2024 I did a live painting as part of a performance by the street theater company “Artelier?” as part of the inauguration of a statue in honor of Carnival in the city of Loures.

In September 2024 I held the exhibition “From roots to Blue” at Espaço atmospheric m, on Rua Castilho in Lisbon. In this exhibition I also included works by my father, José Assis, in order to provide visitors with a journey that goes from my ancestral roots to my predominant color, blue.

Still in December 2024, I participated in group exhibitions, one in Lisbon "12x12" and another in Cacilhas "Salão de Inverno" in the Irmã Feia collective.

I currently divide my time between painting, graphic design as a freelancer and the classes I attend at the painting course at the Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes.

The themes I work on are transversal to everyone, I explore the way we express or not express our emotions, the way we relate to others and the way we react to life's adversities. The strength of the feminine in society and resilience are also very present themes in my work.

Both figuratively and abstractly, my works are characterized and differentiated by overlaps, textures and the use of strong, contrasting colors. The movements that inspire me most are Fauvism and Pop Art, but my art is influenced by all the art that surrounds me and that I have consumed since I was a child.
